This research publication explores the intersection of chess and art from a cultural perspective. After seeing online chess take off among my friends, I became curious about what makes someone skilled at chess, how old the game really is, and what happens when it meets design, fine art, and television.

The spreads are designed on a 1 x 1 grid, mimicking a chessboard. Seven sections cover Matisse’s connection to chess, three significant games in history, famous players, and key chess terms.

Discovering Marcel Duchamp’s late-career devotion to chess shaped the publication’s direction: monochromatic photography and an older serif, Quadrant Text, place the game in a traditional setting, while Quadrant Mono handles numbers and dates to underline its statistical nature.
